Abstract
Children with mild mental retardation, namely children who have an IQ of 55-70. The need to see the gestures of mildly mentally retarded children in learning is to help mildly mentally retarded children understand the material being taught as well as help in social interaction with the school community. This research aims to find out and identify so that an analysis can be carried out on the gesture indication stages of children with mild intellectual disabilities in initial reading learning in class I at SDN Mojorejo 01 Batu City.
This research uses qualitative research with a descriptive type. This research was carried out at SDN Mojorejo 01 Kota Batu which focused on children with mild intellectual disabilities in class I. The data collection methods used were observation, interviews and documentation in the form of audiovisual recordings and photos. Data sources are primary data (results of observations and interviews with mildly mentally retarded children in class I at SDN Mojorejo 01 Batu City) and secondary data (documentation). Data analysis includes 3 stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions and verification. Research procedures include planning, implementation and final stages. Checking the validity of the data uses triangulation techniques. This research was carried out in the even semester of the 2023/2024 academic year.
The research results obtained were from the four types of gestures according to McNeill, namely iconic, metaphorical, deictic (pointing) and tapping movements. There were two gestures that appeared in mildly mentally retarded children, namely deictic (pointing) gestures and tapping. These two gestures appear in the stages of the learning process in accordance with the individual learning program (PPI) which includes playing/ice breaking, rhythmic applause and singing together which are replaced by high-five movements for mildly mentally retarded children and special accompanying teachers, recognizing the vowels a, i, u, e, o and consonants, and reads syllables well. The deictic gesture type appeared 46 times and the tapping gesture type 4 times. Therefore, it can be concluded that in this study the deictic type of gesture is the most dominant one used by children with mild mental retardation
