Abstract
Background : Inguinal hernia is a common surgical case after appendicitis. This condition can lead to job loss, disability, and even death. In adults, inguinal hernia is triggered by risk factors such as obesity, heavy lifting, chronic cough, ascites, and family history. A high body mass index increases the risk of hernia, particularly inguinal hernia (hernia in the groin area).
Objective : To determine the relationship between body mass index and the incidence of inguinal hernia in patients at the General Surgery Clinic of Muhammadiyah University General Hospital Malang from June 2023 to May 2024.
Methods : This study is an observational analytic study with a cross- sectional design. The sample size for this study was determined using the chi- square formula, with a total of 16 inguinal hernia patients. Data from the patients' medical records were used to calculate body weight and height, which were then input into the body mass index calculation formula. Bivariate analysis was performed using chi-square analysis with SPSS version 26.
Results : The results of the study from 20 data points showed that 13 were overweight, while 7 were not overweight and the bivariate statistical test using chi-square resulted in a p-value of (0.003).
Conclusion : There is a significant relationship between body mass index and the incidence of inguinal hernia.
