Abstract

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered approach.
Students will be invited to learn to solve real problems and students play an
active role in finding solutions to solve the problems given. Learning that uses
real-life problems can improve critical thinking skills. In its learning, the
Problem Based Learning model involves the 4C principles of critical thinking,
communication, collaboration, and creativity. This literature review study aims
to examine the trend of applying the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in
biology learning and identify the biology competencies that are most often
developed through PBL. The literature study was conducted by analyzing 40
SINTA accredited journal articles. Inclusion criteria include articles related to
the application of the Problem Based Learning model in biology learning,
journals published in the 2019-2024 range, and articles used in Indonesian and
SINTA accredited. Data analysis techniques are in the form of qualitative
analysis which includes data presentation in the form of tables, graphs and
diagrams and conclusions. The results showed that the trend of applying the
Problem Based Learning (PBL) model tended to increase. In addition, Problem
Based Learning (PBL) is proven to be effective in improving various student
competencies, such as cognitive abilities with a percentage value of 30%,
critical thinking skills, and critical thinking skills.
