Abstract
Sociolinguistics is a science that focuses on studying language and its
relationship to society. In language learning, sociolinguistics helps a teacher and
students to determine a picture of the state of language in the school environment
and the language variations that emerge in schools due to societal patterns in
language use. The use of language in life greatly influences the articulation of
communication and interaction between humans. This interaction provides a unity
to connect differences. Therefore, diversity in language is unique in the field of
communication. The use of language in educational institutions is very susceptible
to being influenced by the environment. The theory that will be used in analyzing
the data is language variation by Martin Joss (via Abdul Chaer, 2004). Based on the
level of formality, Martin Joss differentiates language variations into five forms,
namely frozen varieties, formal varieties, consultative varieties, casual varieties and
intimate varieties.
This research aims to describe the role or contribution of sociolinguistics in
learning Indonesian at school, as well as describing the existence of language
variations in schools which influence Indonesian language learning. The data
sources in this research are teachers and students at Tumapel Malang Vocational
School who are involved in interactions both in the classroom during the teaching
and learning process and outside the classroom. The method for collecting data is
observation and documentation. Conversations between teachers and students will
be observed and documented in the form of recordings. The recording will then be
converted into written text to make it easier to analyze. In analyzing the data, a
qualitative descriptive method will be used to obtain a more in-depth explanation
regarding language variations in the learning interaction process between teachers
and students at Tumapel Vocational School, Malang.
