Abstract

Background: Sugar-sweetened beverages are high-calorie, high-sugar drinks with low nutritional value. The high-calorie content in sugary drinks can significantly affect an individual's daily caloric intake. Excessive consumption of sugary drinks can increase the risk of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as obesity, type II diabetes, and even cardiovascular diseases. Overconsumption of fast food, high-sugar drinks, as well as snacks and carbonated foods, along with a lack of essential nutrients from food sources like fruits, vegetables, and meat, rich in carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and vitamins, can trigger the onset of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Stemming from this understanding, this research aims to examine the relationship between the frequency of consumption of sweetened beverages and blood glucose levels among students of the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang.
Method: This study employed a quantitative correlational method with a cross-sectional approach, conducted on campus 2 of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang from December 2023 to January 2024. Incidental Sampling Technique was used to collect data from 53 respondents. Data were obtained through the completion of questionnaires about sweetened beverage consumption and blood glucose level testing. The data analysis in this study applied the Spearman correlation test as the statistical method.
Results: The results of the research analysis showed a p-value of 0.034 and a correlation value (r) of 0.292, which means there is a relationship between the consumption of sweetened drinks and blood glucose in nursing students at Muhammadiyah University, Malang.
Conclusion: There is a relationship between the consumption of sweetened beverages and blood glucose levels in nursing students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
