Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in joining the Esa Progressio organization for the 2022/2023 period at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Motivation is crucial as it encompasses the reasons and goals behind actions. This research uses self-determination theory to explain students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to get involved in Esa Progressio organization. This research used a qualitative research method, including questionnaire and interview session as research techniques. Based on the data analysis, it can be shown that students' intrinsic motivation is mostly influenced by students' awareness of the organizational benefits and students' satisfaction and enjoyment in carrying out organizational activities. Moreover, students' extrinsic motivation is largely influenced by externally regulated factor, that involve appreciation, friendship, and recognition of students’ environment, followed by the identification factor which is students’ future career planning. Furthermore, it reveals that extrinsic motivation is the most dominant type of students’ motivation in joining the Esa Progressio organization for the 2022/2023 period.
