Abstract
This study was conducted to analyze the error or phonemes in reading aloud activity produced by the first semester students of English Department of Muhammdiyah University of Malang. The design that the researcher used is descriptive qualitative research. The sample was taken by using random sampling technique. The population was 192 students; the sample consisted of 20 students. The researcher took the students from the 1st semester because in that semester they got pronunciation subject. The instrument that the researcher used in this study was pronunciation test, conducted orally. The pronunciation test was in the form if article, consisting of 363 words and 1269 phonemes. The data showed that 19 students (95%) mispronounced phoneme /æ/ 18 students (90%) mispronounced phoneme /I /, 12 students (60%) mispronounced phoneme /ð/, 15 students (75%) mispronounced phoneme /d /, 10 students (50%) mispronounced phoneme /z/, 8 students (40%) mispronounced phoneme / /, 14 students (70%) mispronounced phoneme / θ /, and 14 students (70%) mispronounced phoneme / tf /. And the most mispronounced phoneme was / æ / (95% of the students). The causes of the error in pronounced the English phoneme might be caused by the differences in vowel phonemes between English and Indonesian; and the variant of the mother tongue.
