Abstract
The Javanese society is a syncretism society, means that a religion value and culture in the Java is a result of Hinduismand Buddhism values and ancestor values with Islamic values. One of the syncretism cultures is tahlilan. The “tahlilan” has been exist until now because there is a positive belief of the “tahlilan” that is from a knowledge. This positive belief will finally give a motive to join in “tahlilan”. Therefore, this purpose of the research is to know how the belief of Javanese society related to “tahlilan” and the motive of it. This research uses a qualitative method by using a descriptive approach. The research subjects are an Islamic forum of tahlilan of Dusun Rambaan, desa LandungsariDau and consist of seven people who are decided by using a purposive sampling. The method of data finding is by interviewing semi structurally, and the technique of data validity by using triangulation sources. The research has founded that their belief related to “tahlilan” is kown it is one of activities giving some positive advantages, such as it is a worship form to Allah SWT, some hopes received quickly because the people pray together, soul in the grave will be happy, and still wait to be given a praying. The “tahlilan” is a way to be peace and a forum to make unity for the society. This belief exists because the “tahlilan” is a tradition that had been taught by generation to generation. A society’s knowledge of it has not come from a learning product involving efforts of searching rationally, but it is from tradition. The “tahlilan” has existed because the Javanese society is a social society, so that the individual dependent level toward his environment will be high. The “tahlilan” is a concrete something of values taking by Javanese society and concluded in a one phrase “sakti mamayu hayuning bawana” (to keep world welfare). A positive belief of the “tahlilan” makes finally a motive to join it. The main motive of the society joining the “tahlilan” is a social motive besides theological and objective motive. The society joins it because they want to create a peace and meet with their friends. Therefore, if we do not join in the “tahlilan”, we feel alone and disquiet because of cannot meet together with our friends.
