Literature may become an interesting subject because the reader can understand and imagine what the author said. Trough studying literature, we can get enjoyment, delight, and satisfaction. In literature especially in novel, someone can enter a new world of experience that he never has before. In this thesis, the writer focuses on the defection of Boris Kuznetov the main character in Leon Uris's novel "TOPAZ". This thesis used descriptive qualitative method because there was no treatment as in experimental research. This thesis just described or interpreted the condition or situation. The writer used objective approach in doing the analysis because the writer did not need to study the author's life, the background of the work and the background of society, but she just analyzed the work itself. This research deals with three problems: 1) the psychological conflicts faced by Boris Kuznetov in “Topaz” novel by Leon Uris, 2) the causes of Boris Kuznetov’s psychological conflicts, 3) the way Boris Kuznetov solve his psychological conflicts. The objective of this study are: to find out the psychological conflicts faced by Boris Kuznetov in the novel “Topaz” by Leon Uris, to know the causes of Boris Kuznetov’s psychological conflicts, to know the way Boris Kuznetov solves his psychological conflicts. As the result, this analysis showed that three are three reasons for Boris Kuznetov psychological conflict : he was going to be killed by his own people, he wanted to protect his family, and he did not want the Soviet Union to be destroyed. Being a defector has effected has psychological conflicts in three ways: Boris become a person who had weak conviction, Boris become a coward person, Boris become bad father. There are four ways for Boris Kuznetov solves his psychological conflict: he changed the appearance of his family through the plastic surgery, he trained his family being American people, he gave Tamara a chance to study music, and he told his family that he had chosen the right way by being a defector.
