ABSTRACT The times from the traditional to the modern result in bringing many changes - changes that occur in society. The development from traditional to modern, large to more impact on the economy has been in use by many manufacturers in the market master. The development of traditional markets is concerned, this is caused emergence of the modern market, which in turn shifts the existence of traditional markets. This phenomenon occurred in the village of tile, that the consumers prefer a modern market than traditional market tradisional.So markets into a modern market while become very good progress. To see the significance of the market and modern market tardisional, researchers formulate the problem as to whether the social meaning consumers of traditional markets and modern markets and factors - what factor influence the difference in meaning. In this study using qualitative descriptive research type, location in the Village District Tile Tile Sub Banyuwangi.subyek research is the mother - a housewife, with a sampling technique that is purposive sampling.Teknik data collection is by using observation, interviews and documentation. The theory used is the symbolic interaction theory of Herbert Blumer and rational choice theory of James C. Coleman, in symbolic interaction theory of Herbert Blumer, which is based on three premises that is, the first premise that man was acting on "meaning". The second premise, with the understanding, views and experiences of informants can be the result of interaction with other consumer good with neighbors, relatives or friends and it affects meaning they caused, and through an interpretation of their action. The third premise that is through a process of interaction can enhance the understanding, views and experience possessed by the informant about the traditional markets and modern markets. Rational choice theory with the basic idea that Coleman's actions in a menagarah one goal, and purpose (and also the action) is determined by the value or selection (preference). In this case when the informant made an action that leads to the goal of their action informants chose shopping in traditional markets, it will become a destination of their choice where to shop at traditional markets is determined by the value - the value or choice that they consider as an option rational, it is also influenced by pemahman and experience they felt that based on these customers to make an action. This also applies to informants who chose the modern market, they chose to do an act of shopping in the modern market, it leads to a destination where the destination is also determined by a value or choice. Rational choice someone who chose to shop in a modern market due to convenience shopping, or complete bdiberikan facilities and other - other. It is a choice for individuals whether they would prefer traditional markets or modern markets.
