Abstract

This study focused on the teachers’ strategies used by the English teacher to arouse the students’ motivation at SMPN I Cepu. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to know some strategies used by the English teacher to arouse the students’ motivation at SMPN I Cepu. The research design used in this study was descriptive qualitative design. The writer took only one English teacher who was teaching in the second year students at SMPN I Cepu as the research subject. There were two instruments used in taking the data, namely observation and interview. The result of this study showed that the teacher applied appropriate teaching strategy to arouse students’ motivation in teaching learning process. There were six strategies which used by the English teacher: (1) preparing the material before class and creating various different games, it made students more active in discussing the previous materials, had good spirit to tackle each game given by the teacher, and were very curious to follow the interesting materials. (2) Providing feedback to the students’ error, it was the way to develop the students’ capability because students never thought that making mistakes was a bad thing in learning English. (3) Providing reinforcement (praise, smile, good grade, etc) to the active students, it made students’ motivation increases well when teacher appreciated their work. (4) Providing punishment to disrupted students in classroom, it made the students more concentrate on the explanation and the students who got punishment tried to answer the question to be able to compensate the punishment. (5) Using visual aids (blackboard, pictures, OHP, etc), the students were easier to understand the materials, more curious and didn’t get bored with the lesson, and (6) changing seating arrangements of classroom, the students didn’t feel the bored situation in learning English. They kept having strong interest to follow the classroom activity. Motivation has an important role in learning English, without motivation the success is difficult to be gained. Therefore, teacher should use appropriate teaching strategies to arouse students’ motivation.
