Abstract

This research aimed at studying the implementation of semantic mapping to improve vocabulary of the eight year students of SMP Negeri 8 Malang in reading comprehension. Semantic Mapping is a technique for developing word meanings by visually mapping relationships among words in a graphic or a diagram format. Based on the theory the writer wanted to find out whether semantic mapping can improve the students’ vocabulary in reading comprehension or not. The research design used in this study was quasi­experiment with non randomized pre­test and post­test. The writer used quasi­experiment because it was impossible for the writer to randomize the class which had already been determined by the school. The population taken was the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 8 Malang. The writer took two classes as control group and experimental group. Those classes were VIII A as control group and VIII C as experimental group. The total sample of this study was 76 students. Based on the result of the data analysis, the improvement of the experimental group’s vocabulary was slightly better than that of the control group. This was because after several treatments, the mean score of the experimental group was 81.32, while the mean score of the control group was 70.89. Based on the result of t­test, it was found out that the t­value was 5.92. At level of significance 0,005, and the degrees of freedom 37, it was found out that the t­table was 1.6871. The data showed that the t­value was greater than t­table. Therefore, the hypothesis stated that semantic mapping can improve the students’ vocabulary in reading comprehension was accepted.
