Abstract

Culture and communication are inseparable. Different cultures provide norms, values, and varying rules, leading individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds to communicate differently. Gudykunst argues that communication between people from different cultures is hindered by anxiety and uncertainty, which can be minimized through mindfulness in communication. Interaction between students from Mataram and those from different cultures in Malang represents a form of intercultural encounter, stemming from their distinct cultural backgrounds. These differences sometimes give rise to anxiety and uncertainty. By applying Gudykunst Theory of Mindfulness Intercultural Communication, this study aims to examine the anxieties and uncertainties experienced by students from Mataram, as well as the mindful strategies they have employed to manage these issues. The findings reveal that students from Mataram have consciously managed their anxieties and uncertainties by acquiring sufficient knowledge about other cultures and languages, demonstrating motivation to enhance communication skills, and possessing the abilities required for competent intercultural communication listening, observing, analyzing, interpreting, and applying specific behaviors to achieve goals.
