Abstract

Background: Chemotherapy is the main systemic treatment that is currently established as the main component of cancer treatment. However, chemotherapy has many side effects and the most commonly felt is fatigue which manifests as a decrease in physical fitness status. Back massage is a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce fatigue and provide a feeling of relaxation and comfort to patients. For this reason, this research aims to apply the kolcaba theory by providing back massage to reduce fatigue in patients undergoing lung cancer chemotherapy at Malang City Regional Hospital.
Method: This research used a case report by following scientific methods according to the principles of the nursing process including: assessment, data analysis, nursing intervention, nursing implementation, and evaluation. The intervention in this research was by providing back massage, The implementation of this intervention was given once every day before or after chemotherapy for approximately 15 minutes.
Results: After giving back massage for 3 consecutive days to patients who experienced fatigue, a fatigue score of 2.4 (mild fatigue) was obtained, with the criteria being that energy recovery increased, energy increased, complaints of fatigue decreased and rest patterns improved.
Discussion: The nursing problem that is a priority in this lung cancer case is fatigue by applying Kolcaba's theory to provide a sense of comfort to patients before or after chemotherapy with the intervention of providing back massage. The nursing evaluation obtained was that the problem was resolved.
