Abstract
Roads are vital land transportation infrastructure that support human life. One of the key
components of roads is intersections. Intersections are critical elements in the
transportation network as they play a crucial role in regulating traffic flow. This study
examines the traffic performance at the unsignalized four-way intersection of Jalan Raya
Kepuharjo – Jalan Balai Desa Kepuharjo – Jalan Pertamanan in Malang, which is one of
the intersections not equipped with traffic signals. This unsignalized four-way intersection
is surrounded by a store, a factory, and a school. Its main road, Jalan Raya Kepuharjo,
serves as a bus and truck route connecting Malang City and Batu City, thus potentially
causing congestion. The aim of this study is to evaluate the intersection's performance by
analyzing its capacity, degree of saturation, delay, and level of service, which can help
identify improvement alternatives if the intersection's performance is found to be
suboptimal. Traffic data were collected through field surveys during peak morning to
evening periods. The analysis method refers to the Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual
(MKJI) of 1997, published by the Directorate General of Highways. The results of the
traffic performance study at the unsignalized four-way intersection of Jalan Raya
Kepuharjo – Jalan Balai Desa Kepuharjo – Jalan Pertamanan in Malang indicate that the
intersection's capacity is significantly influenced by traffic volume and vehicle
composition, as reflected by the degree of saturation (DS) value of 1,17. This study suggests
alternative traffic management strategies to improve the efficiency and performance of the
unsignalized four-way intersection. The conclusions from this research are expected to
contribute to better urban transportation planning.
