Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive and irreversible disorder of renal function in which the body's ability fails to maintain metabolism and fluid and electrolyte balance which causes uremia (retention of urea and other nitrogen waste in the blood). One of the kidney replacement therapies that is widely used today is hemodialysis. When a patient does not undergo hemodialysis, the patient will experience fluid accumulation in the body and the patient must limit his fluid intake so that it does not have a negative impact on his quality of life. Restricted fluid intake causes HD patients to experience dry mouth and increased thirst, requiring methods to stimulate saliva secretion. To stimulate saliva so that the patient is not thirsty, one way is by chewing xylitol gum.
Purpose: This study aims to identify the effectiveness of xylitol chewing gum in reducing thirst levels in patients diagnosed with CKD.
Research methods:This type of research in scientific writing uses descriptive methods in the form of case studies. This case study research explores the problem of nursing care for Mr. P with CKD who is undergoing hemodialysis. The focus of this case study is on the effect of chewing gum (xylitol) on reducing the patient's thirst level as measured usingThird distress scale (TDS) andvisual analogue score (VASE).
Results: The results obtained after carrying out the intervention for 3 days were a decrease in the level of thirst in patients, which can be seen from the results of measuring the level of thirst during the 3 days of giving xylitol gum.
Conclusion: Based on case study analysis of the effect of xylitol chewing gum on reducing the level of thirst in patients, it was found that giving chewing gum had an effect on reducing the patient's thirst.
