Abstract

This study aims to analyse Indonesia's public diplomacy strategy in increasing swallow's nest trade access in the Chinese market in 2023. The approach used includes the integration of propaganda, imaging, and inter-state relations, involving various state and non-state actors. Propaganda was conducted through the media and international forums such as the Yanzhiwu 2024 Partner Conference, while branding emphasised working visits and intensive meetings between the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantan) and the Chinese side. Relations between countries were strengthened through high-level meetings such as the High-Level Dialogue Cooperation Mechanism (HDCM) and bilateral visits between President Joko Widodo and President Xi Jinping. The results showed that this strategy successfully increased the volume of swallow's nest exports and strengthened diplomatic and economic relations between Indonesia and China. This effective public diplomacy approach, in accordance with Jan Melissen's theory, demonstrates the importance of strategic communication and interaction with non-state actors in achieving diplomatic objectives. The findings make a significant contribution to the understanding of how public diplomacy can be used to support international trade and bilateral relations.
