Abstract

Japan is one of the countries facing highly complex issues related to prostitution. It can be considered a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children from various regions, especially Asia, who become victims of sex trafficking. Cases of sex trafficking originate from economic needs exploited by traffickers to lure victims. According to reports from the United States (U.S.) Department of State Government, for three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022, Japan has consistently been categorized as Tier 2, indicating that Japan does not meet the minimum standards in efforts to eliminate human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking. Consequently, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) such as the Japan Network Against Trafficking in Persons (JNATIP) have emerged to address human rights violations such as human trafficking, violence, and exploitation occurring in Japan, particularly against women and human rights violations against foreign nationals. This study aims to understand the role of JNATIP in curbing sex trafficking cases in Japan from 2020 to 2022. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques and tools in the form of literature studies. Based on the research results, JNATIP plays a dual role as Hybrid and Evolving NGOs in implementing various programs to reduce sex trafficking cases in Japan.
