Abstract

The Aek Nauli Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) is designated as a
conservation area for Sumatran elephants in North Sumatra, known as the Aek Nauli
Elephant Conservation Camp (ANECC). The presence of elephants in the location has a
positive impact on ecotourism and nature conservation. The presence of elephants has an
influence on the surrounding vegetation. The purpose of the study was to determine the
importance value index, dominance index, diversity index, evenness index and vegetation
species richness index in the ANECC area. The study took place in November-December
2023 in the ANECC area using the systematic sampling with random start method with a
square plot shape. The area of the research location is 148 ha with a sampling intensity of
2% and resulting in a total of 74 plots. Data analysis was carried out using the vegetation
analysis method which calculates frequency, density, dominance, relative frequency,
relative density, relative dominance, and the Importance Value Index (INP), diversity
index, dominance index, evenness index and richness index. The results showed that 38
species were found with a total of 1308 individual plants. The highest INP at the tree level
1
with the pine species of 89.4%, at the pole level with the goring goring species of 68.8%,
at the sapling level with the simartolu species of 52.4% and at the seedling level with the
kemenyan species of 114.3%. The diversity index is 2.2 and is categorized as moderate.
The dominance index is 0.2 with the statement that there is no dominant species. The
evenness index is 0.8 and is categorized as high while the richness index is 3.4 and is
categorized as low. There needs to be marking, monitoring and maintenance activities on
typical plants to review and maintain plant growth.
