Abstract

Background: Acute Lung Oedema (ALO) patients who experience breathing pattern disorders are characterized by complaints of shortness of breath (dyspnea) and an increase in breathing frequency (tachypnea) due to fluid buildup in the lungs, resulting in the problem of ineffective breathing pattern nursing. This case study aims to determine the results of administering oxygen and the semi-Fowler position to improve breathing patterns in Acute Lung Oedema (ALO) patients.
Method: The research design used in this case study is qualitative research with a case study research strategy. This case study uses 2 patients with the same medical diagnosis, namely Acute Lung Oedema (ALO) and uses a sampling technique, namely non-probability sampling with a purposive sampling approach. In the data collection process, the author used interview/anamnesis techniques, observation, documentation studies related to the 2 patients studied.
Results: After the intervention of administering oxygen and semi-Fowler's position, the results were obtained in case 1: complaints of shortness of breath decreased quite a lot, use of accessory muscles for breathing decreased quite a lot, and breathing frequency improved (RR: 20x/minute), and case 2: complaints of shortness of breath decreased, use of respiratory muscles decrease, respiratory frequency improves (RR: 19x/minute).
Discussion: The main nursing problem in the 2 cases in this study was that the breathing pattern was ineffective and respiration monitoring interventions were carried out as well as administering oxygen and the semi-Fowler position as additional interventions studied. Researchers recommend a combination of oxygen administration and semi-Fowler's position to improve breathing patterns in Acute Lung Oedema (ALO) patients in the emergency room.
