Abstract

Negative behaviors such as smoking, skipping school, street racing, and others indicated low adolescent independence in decision-making and an inability to assess the risks involved in their actions. Attachment is one of the factors that can influence independence. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of father attachment on the independence of adolescents whose fathers worked outside the city. The research method used is non-experimental correlational quantitative design with a non-probability sampling technique used accidental sampling. The criteria subject were adolescents aged 17-23 years whose fathers worked outside the city and returned home at least once a month. The total subject in this study were 141 subject. The research instruments used were the Inventory Of Parent and Peer Attachment to measure attachment, and the Adolescent Autonomy Questionnaire (AAQ) to measure adolescent independence. The data analysis results used simple regression analysis showed a significant influence of father attachment on adolescent independence with a significance value (p) of 0.007 < 0.05. Meaning that the higher the attachment of adolescent to parent, the higher the independence of adolescent. The implications of the study were that fathers should continue their parenting role, such as maintaining communication to preserve trust and attachment between fathers and adolescents.
