Abstract
Tiktok is a social media platform to produce short videos content, share videos, and even live streaming. There is a phenomenon about showing sadness to earn gift by taking advantage the empathy of people who watches the content. Schadenfreude is one of the behavior that exists in that phenomenon, which is a behavior of someone who likes to see people’s bad luck. Expectedly there is also empathy, which is someone’s capability to understand people’s feelings and emotions, also the capability to put their shoes on someone else’s shoes. This research’s purpose is to know the connection between schadenfreude and empathy of University Muhammadiyah Malang’s students in the utilization of social media Tiktok. This research is using quantitative research, with 131 subjects of university’s students (18 – 24 years old) whom in the latest 12 months has watched Tiktok’s live. The subjects in this research is recruited by purposive sampling technique. This research is using schadenfreude and Interpersonal Reacticity Index (IRI) as scales. Data analysis is using pearson correlation and gained result as there is a positive correlation between schadenfreude and empathy of the university student (r = 0.284 : ρ<0.0001). This result indicates that the higher schadenfreude is in university students, the higher empathy that the university students have when using Tiktok as a social media.
