Abstract
Background : Acute Myleoid Leukemia is a disease of white blood cells where these cells do not develop fully and changes usually begin in the marrow cells that form red blood cells, several types of white blood cells and platelets. Cancer is a chronic disease in which cells in the body change and grow out of control. Chemotherapy is a therapy commonly given to cancer patients which functions to inhibit cell division by killing cancer cells. One of the effects of chemotherapy is decreasing sleep quality. Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy that can reduce nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. This aim is to determine the effect of giving peppermint aromatherapy on reducing post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting. Some common signs and symptoms in Acute Myeloid Leukemia sufferers include fever and bone pain, body lethargy, fatigue, shortness of breath, pale skin and frequent infections, easy bruising and frequent unusual bleeding such as nosebleeds, bleeding during menstruation or gum disease. bloody. The exact cause of Acute Myeloid Leukemia is not yet known, but it is most likely related to mutated DNA such as blood disorders, namely myelodysplasia, myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera or thrombocythemia.
Methode : The research method for Ners' Final Scientific Work is a case study report taken on March 11 2023 on a patient diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. For non-pharmacological intervention, namely giving Peppermint Aromatherapy therapy which is carried out for 3 days in the Bunaken room. Mrs. M is 69 years old with a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) + Anemia who complains of nausea and vomiting. The intensity of nausea is seen from post- chemotherapy patient complaints in a subjective way based on the Indonesian Nursing Outcome Standards (SLKI). Apply 2-3 drops of Peppermint Aromatherapy onto a tissue, then ask the respondent to inhale the aromatherapy while relaxing for 5 minutes. So a significant decrease in the Nausea level can occur in this problem. Conclusions and suggestions; After giving peppermint aromatherapy to patients with Nausea nursing problems, it can reduce feelings of nausea and vomiting.
Result : Peppermint Aromatherapy Therapy is able to provide relaxation to post-chemotherapy patients. The relaxation process in post-chemotherapy patients begins with the transfer of volatile molecules to the cilia in the nose, this then stimulates the formation of electrochemical messages which will be transmitted to the limbic system which will end up in the receptor cells. After being given the intervention for 3 days, it showed a significant reduction where the patient said the feeling of nausea was reduced, appetite improved, and the feeling of bitterness in the mouth decreased.
Conclusion : Peppermint Aromatherapy Therapy is very useful for reducing nausea in post- chemotherapy patients. Recommendations for nurses to provide education should be applied to patients undergoing chemotherapy who complain of nausea.
