Abstract
Indonesia is a vast country and has many diverse cultures. One of the cultural results is disaster. Ketulah, as local wisdom that originates from local knowledge, has now become Indonesia's cultural identity. The existence of this culture is able to dynamize a social life full of civility and wisdom. This research aims to determine the relationship between ketulah and the manifestation of forms and meanings in social life and to determine the level of its existence in society, especially among teenagers in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan Province. To answer the problem of forms of ketulah, the researcher uses Indonesian folklore theory from the thoughts of James Dananjaja, and to answer the problem of meaning, the researcher uses the semiotic theory from the thought of Roland Barthes.
In this research, researchers used ethnographic methods which involve researchers mingling with community life to collect data. Data collection procedures in this research were carried out using observation, interviews, documentation and literature study. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation and conclusion verification.
The results of the research show that the forms and meanings of disasters among teenagers in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan Province are still rules that are included in the disaster regulations. The ketulah rules that are still known to the public are usually in the form of ketulah rules that are closely related to daily activities, such as the prohibition on refusing food and so on. The ketulah that they know is interpreted in various ways according to the meaning of the ketulah itself, namely prohibitions with other characteristics or meanings such as connotation and denotation.
