Abstract
This research aims to analyze the communication patterns that occur in the Chroma Discord Channel among players in the online game Valorant. This study explores the dynamics of interaction and communication used by players, particularly in the context of utilizing the In-Game Leader (IGL) system. The communication pattern theory in this research uses De Vito's theory, which explains the five forms of communication network structures within a group.
In this study, a qualitative approach with a case study research type is used. The data collection process involves observation, documentation, and interviews. After the data is collected, the next step is to analyze it using the Miles & Huberman model of analysis. Data validity is then tested through source triangulation methods to ensure the validity and reliability of the research findings.
The results of this study show that the communication patterns of players while playing Valorant vary at each stage. In the first stage (lobby), player communication uses a star pattern with open communication. The second stage (agent selection) also shows a star pattern, with discussions and suggestions regarding agent choices. The third and fifth stages (purchase phase) use a wheel pattern, where instructions and weapon purchase decisions are centralized on the In-Game Leader (IGL). The fourth and sixth stages (gameplay phase) also have the same pattern, with a star pattern when the IGL gives instructions to all team members and when all team players share information about the enemy and game situations.
