Abstract

The Buceng Kuat tradition is a tradition in Bago Village, Tulungagung District which is usually used for thanksgiving events, starting from circumcisions, pitonans, and especially home thanksgivings. In general, this tradition is carried out in several districts or cities in East Java, such as Tulungagung, Trenggalek, Kediri, and Blitar. The implementation of the Buceng Kuat Tradition is always accompanied by offerings with the aim of making them perfect. The Buceng Kuat tradition has a nonverbal message of refuse reinforcements, so the nonverbal message contained in its offerings becomes more beneficial to society. However, this tradition is starting to be pushed aside as time goes by.
Plus, the younger generation of people is less interested in this tradition. The Buceng Kuat tradition has not been claimed or acquired by other districts or cities in East Java, so the people of Tulungagung Regency have the opportunity to form an identity as a new iconic characteristic through this tradition. This research aims to describe the nonverbal messages of offerings in the Buceng Kuat Tradition of the community in Bago Village, Tulungagung District.
This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type and is based on case study research. Data collection techniques used interviews and documentation with 6 (six) research subjects obtained through purposive sampling. All data was analyzed using data analysis concepts from Robert K. Yin, which tested the validity of the data using data source triangulation techniques.
The results of research regarding offerings in the Buceng Kuat Tradition have different nonverbal messages in each offering, which can be able an impact and benefit in the form of goodness for the community in Bago Village, Tulungagung District.
Researchers draw the conclusion that offerings as a symbol in the Buceng Kuat Tradition are interpreted to symbolize humans who are obedient to the almighty so that they always remember safety. This is one way for the people in Bago Village, Tulungagung District, to protect themselves from evil and glorify their God by using these offerings.
