Abstract

Bausung is a tradition passed down from generation to generation, thus containing symbols that will be passed on to the next generation to maintain their culture. The purpose of this research is to determine the perception of the symbol meaning in Banjar tradition in Banjarnese weddings, especially among communities in Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency, South Kalimantan. The meaning of this symbol is formed from the perception of the people who carry out this tradition. The symbols that are formed are then passed on from generation to generation to preserve their culture.

This research uses a qualitative approach using descriptive type and basic case study research. The technique used to collect data is through observation, interviews and documentation with 6 (six) subjects involved, obtained through the snow ball technique. The data obtained then analyzed using case study analysis initiated by Robert K. Yin, then tested for the validity using triangulation techniques.

The meanings of the symbols that we found include the symbol of a decorative umbrella as a sign of respect for the bride and groom, the symbol of the gipang horse dance which is a symbol of loyalty to the bride and groom, the symbol of the cloth slung over the shoulder of the pausungan which indicates the hope that the newly formed family will be strong and peaceful. Furthermore, the path symbol of the bride and groom take when carrying out Bausung is a form of respect for the bride and groom.
