Abstract

This research focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of using Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT) as the learning media to improve reading comprehension, as expressed by the University of Muhammadiyah Malang's EFL students at the English Learning Education Department. This study's research design falls under the category of mixed-method research with 30 respondents completed a closed-ended questionnaire for this study, and 4 of them participated in a semi-structured interview to gather data. The result show that there are strengths and weaknesses using Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT) as the learning media to improve EFL writing ability. The strengths of Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT) is that it helps the students’ writing abilities and gain confidence. Additionally, by improving students’ enthusiasm in studying and making English content simpler to grasp, it can help them write better in the language. Furthermore, the shortcomings showed that students are not happy with the high data internet quota needed to gain acces, which can restrict their participation in online learning. Additionally, spending too much time on ChatGPT might lower loearning outcomes by exposing users to non-educational informations and causing distractions.
