Abstract

The heavy metal lead can cause poisoning. Tamarind fruit (T. indica) is thought to contain citric acid as its main content and various other active substances which can act as chelating agents capable of binding lead metal so that the level in blood can be lowered. The objective of this research is to etermine the effect of ethanol extracts of tamarind fruit on blood lead levels in lead acetate induced male white rats (Rattus norvegicus strain wistar. This research’s design is true experimental with post test-only control group design, 20 rats were divided into 4 groups: 1 group was given 10 mg/day of lead, while 3 groups were given lead and ethanol extract of tamarind fruit at doses of 12.5, 25, 50 mg/kgBW. /day. Blood lead levels were measured using AAS. Data were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis and the test obtained no statistically significant difference (p: 0.627) among the treatment groups, which means that there was no significant difference in the effectiveness of the ethanol extract of tamarind fruit on blood lead levels. This is influenced by many factors such as methods, time and tools which contribute to errors in research results.
