Abstract
Background: Fungi are one of the pathogens that cause infectious diseases, especially in tropical countries such as Indonesia. Candida species is the main pathogen causing opportunistic fungal infections that are common worldwide. About 70% of cases of fungal infections globally are caused by Candida albicans (Talapko et al., 2021). Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by fungi from the Candida sp group, one of which is Candida albicans. Candida albicans is a microorganism commonly found in the skin, mucous membranes, mouth, digestive tract, respiratory tract, and vagina (Makhfirah et al., 2020). Infections caused by Candida albicans are opportunistic infections that can occur due to a decrease in the immune system. Antifungal therapy can be done using synthetic or herbal drugs. One of the plants that can be used as an alternative to antifungal therapy is mahogany.
Objective: To determine the activity of ethyl acetate extract of mahogany leaves (Swietenia mahagoni L.) as an antifungal agent against Candida albicans fungus.
Methods: Experimental research with disc diffusion method. Antifungal activity test of ethyl acetate extract of mahogany leaves (Swietenia mahagoni L.) will be compared with nystatin 50µL/disk. Data analysis was done by descriptive and statistical tests.
Results and Conclusion: Ethyl acetate extract of mahogany leaves (Swietenia mahagoni L) has the potential as an antifungal that can prevent the growth of Candida albicans. At 5% concentration, the average inhibition zone was 6.63 mm, 25% concentration was 7.58 mm, and at 50% concentration was 8.35 mm. The diameter of the inhibition zone increases as the concentration of the test solution increases. Based on the results of statistical tests showed that there were differences in the diameter of the inhibition zone against 50µL/disk nystatin in each treatment group because (p<0.05).
