Abstract
Background: Fungal infections are a common problem in tropical regions around the world, especially in Indonesia. Every year, fungi infect billions of people and contribute to about 1.5 million deaths. This is comparable to the mortality rate of diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria. Fungal growth usually occurs in the hair, skin, nails, and mouth. The prevalence of fungal infections in the world population is 20-25% (Puspitasari et al., 2019). Candida albicans fungus is the main cause of candidiasis (Setiawan, 2022).
Objective: To determine the antifungal potential of ethyl acetate extract of mahogany leaves (Swietenia mahagoni L.) against Candida albicans which can be indicated by the formation of the diameter of the inhibition zone around the disk.
Research methods: Experimental research with disc diffusion method. Antifungal activity testing of ethyl acetate extract of mahogany leaves (Swietenia mahagoni L.) will be compared with nystatin 50µg/mL. Data analysis was done descriptively and statistical tests. Data from the diameter of the inhibition zone of ethyl acetate extract of mahogany leaves (Swietenia mahagoni L.) in the form of tables and bar charts.
Result and Conclusions: Inhibition zone diameter data obtained at each concentration of 70%, 80%, 90% sequentially amounted to 10.39 mm ± 0.68, 13.33 mm ± 0.74, and 15.07 mm ± 0.76. Based on the results of statistical tests, it shows that there is a significant difference in the inhibition zone, namely positive control with 70% and 80% concentrations with a value (sig) <0.05. Then 70% concentration with 80% and 90% concentration with a value (sig) <0.05. Ethyl acetate extract of mahogany leaves (Swietenia mahagoni L.) can potentially be used as an alternative as an antifungal treatment in candidiasis infection.
