Abstract

After the end of US influence in Afghanistan followed by the withdrawal process of US military troops in August 2021 from Afghanistan, it has previously provided an opportunity for China to be able to expand China's market or investment in Afghanistan through one of its foreign policies known as; Belt And Road Initiative (BRI), a global trade route project connected to China where China invests and builds infrastructure in countries that its trade routes pass through. Afghanistan has a strategic regional location which makes Afghanistan considered profitable as a hub for China's BRI project. However, it is not only the value of its regional location, the existence of instability in Afghanistan is also a determining factor in the success of the BRI project in Afghanistan. Departing from this, this research seeks to explain how Afghanistan is positioned for China's Belt and Road Initiative project by using the concept of geostrategy where China sees Afghanistan's location and position as the driving force and motivation for the BRI project efforts in Afghanistan. Using qualitative-descriptive methods and using literature studies as data collection techniques. In this way, this research produces initial findings that China's expansion of the BRI project to Afghanistan is due to Afghanistan's location at the regional crossroads between South Asia and Central Asia, making Afghanistan a country that plays a role in connecting China to the region and as a bridge. for China in expanding its interests into the Middle East region, all of which is in order to increase China's position as the dominant country in the world.
