Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the social construction of elderly people regarding begging work and the social construction of elderly beggars. This research is entitled social construction of elderly people regarding begging work. The method used in this research is qualitative research which aims to understand the phenomena experienced by the research subjects as a whole. The results of this research were then analyzed using Peter L. Berger's Social Construction theory. The elderly's social construction of begging shows that they are less comfortable with beggars because beggars behave less well when given money. Apart from that, they don't like it because there are beggars who are still physically strong and have an adequate life. In the externalization process, elderly people in their views towards beggars express various attitudes. They expressed that they were uncomfortable because they felt disturbed by the presence of beggars. The subject stated that there were beggars who were still physically strong but worked as beggars and there were beggars whose actions were not good. In the process of objectification, elderly people receive the opinion from neighbors that there are beggars who actually live well. The process of internalization in the elderly towards beggars, they take action not to give money to beggars if the beggar is still able and physically strong to do other work.
