Abstract

The aim of this study is to seek what motivational strategies done by English for Specific (ESP) instructors at University of Muhammadiyah Malangand how the ESP instructor implements such strategy in the class. Motivating students is crucial in educational setting since it is related to student‟ sachievement. This study applies mixed method in which the researcher used three data collecting tools, namely; questionnaire, observation, and interview.The first step in collecting the data was distributing the questionnaire online to all ESP instructors. Afterward, the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. It was found that present task properly strategy was mostly preferred by ESP instructors. Then, the researcher resumed the research by conducting classroom observation and interview with an ESP instructor in order to enrich the findings. Using observation and interview, it was found that the ESP instructors used a variety of motivational strategies, namely; creating a pleasant classroom climate, familiarizing learners with L2 related values, recognizing student effort,increasing learner‟s goal orientedness, explaining group cohesiveness and groupnorm, demonstrating proper teacher behavior, increasing the l earners‟ expectancy of success, and involving L1 in classroom instruction.
