Abstract

The development of teen slang on social media is getting faster and wider. This is inseparable from the development of
communication technology that is utilized in communicating. To that end, the lexicon of slang develops in line with the
dynamics of adolescence. This research aims to study the slang of millennial teenagers based on their form, source and
pattern of formation, purpose, and context of use. The research approach used is qualitative descriptive, namely studying
language data in the form of the use of slang by millennial teenagers and interpreting it. Research data sources from social
media, namely Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram that contain teen slang. Conten analysis techniques are used in studying
data. The results showed the use of slang by millennial teenagers is sourced from regional languages, Indonesian, foreign
languages, as well as a combination of Indonesian and foreign languages. Patterns of slang formation of abbreviations,
shortening of words, acronyms, word reversals, dipleted words and shifts in meaning. The purpose of using slang by
millennial teens is to say hello, joke, satire or sneer, and build familiarity in friendships. The context of the use of slang
takes place in casual chat, consent response between speaker and speech partner, admiration response to something, dislike
response to the behavior or attitude of others. Thus, the use of slang for millennial teenagers as a self-expression in building
friendships and close relationships between young people
