Abstract

Social media addiction behavior is often found in the current era, especially this behavior is easily experienced by adolescents. There are several factors that cause adolescents to tend to be addicted to social media, namely loneliness, level of life satisfaction, individual self-esteem value, and social anxiety. Self-esteem owned by adolescents is one of the factors driving social media addiction behavior. Adolescents who are addicted to social media are thought to be due to a lack of selfesteem
so that they tend to consider themselves low and encourage social anxiety, to meet the social needs of these adolescents using social media as a means of communication. This study aims to determine the role of anxiety as a mediator variable in the influence of self-esteem on social media addiction. This type of research is quantitative research using purposive sampling technique as the data collection technique. The instruments used are Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES), Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAS), and Social Anxiety Scale. The results showed that social anxiety can mediate the effect of self-esteem on social
media addiction (β = -0.1539 CI= -0.3017 - -0.0450).
