Abstract
Background: Neonatal asphyxia is the failure of a newborn to initiate and maintain breathing immediately after birth which can result in decreased perfusion, ischemia and organ failure (Mulugeta et al., 2020). Asphyxia occurs in the period immediately after birth requiring immediate resuscitation and intervention to minimize mortality and morbidity (Kawakami et al., 2021).
Method: This research uses a case study report research strategy. The subject of this research was 1 baby with a medical diagnosis of asphyxia who was being treated in the Cut Nyak Dien Perinatology room, Kanjuruhan Regional Hospital.
Results: The results of this research showed several nursing problems after nursing care was carried out for 5 days. The author raised 3 nursing diagnoses, gas exchange disorders, risk of infection, and risk of nutritional deficit.
Discussion: Infants with cases of neonatal asphyxia as a disorder of placental or pulmonary gas exchange which causes hypoxemia and hypercarbia with the resultant effect of metabolic acidosis (as evidenced by low umbilical cord pH < 7), low APGAR score of less than 3 at 10 minutes and abnormal muscle tone (Baby et al., 2021). Babies with asphyxia are classified based on breathing into 3, namely: Score <3, mild respiratory distress, score 4-5, moderate respiratory distress and score >6, severe respiratory distress.
