KUE APEM SEBAGAI SARANA KOMUNIKASI SIMBOLIK PERMOHONAN MAAF ARWAH LELUHUR (STUDI TENTANG RITUAL KENDURI DI DESA PANDANAJENG KABUPATEN MALANG)

This study, entitled "Analysis of the Symbolic Meaning of Apem Cake as an Offering to Deceased Parents at Kenduri Celebrations in Pandanajeng Village, Malang Regency," aims to describe the symbolic meaning of apem cake in the kenduri tradition of the Pandanajeng Village community, specifically as a form of respect, prayer, and offering for deceased parents. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Herbert Blumer's symbolic interactionism theory. This theory is used to understand how the meaning of apem cake is formed through social interactions, passed down from generation to generation, and interpreted as a cultural symbol in the community's social life. Research data was collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation with community members who understand and participate in the kenduri tradition.
The results show that apem cake is understood not only as a traditional food but also as a symbol with social, cultural, and spiritual significance. In the perspective of the Pandanajeng Village community, apem cake is interpreted as an expression of filial piety to deceased parents, a symbol of forgiveness, and a means of prayer for the deceased. This meaning is formed through customs, communication, and community interaction during the kenduri celebrations. The presence of apem cakes also signifies that the family hosting the feast has deceased parents. Through social interaction, the community continues to maintain apem cakes as an important part of the feast tradition. Thus, apem cakes become a cultural symbol that reinforces the values ​​of respect for parents, social solidarity, and the preservation of Javanese traditions in Pandanajeng Village.
