Abstract

Adolescents residing in Islamic boarding schools are more susceptible to experiencing distress compared to those who do not reside in such institutions. This vulnerability may be attributed to various stressors, such as conflicts with peers while living in Islamic boarding schools. When these stressors are left unaddressed, they can lead to distress. The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on reducing distress among adolescents in Islamic boarding schools. The study adopts a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group approach. The subjects in this study consist of 12 adolescents aged 12–14 who experience high levels of distress, measured using The 10-item Perceived Stress Scale. These subjects are divided into experimental and control groups using randomization techniques. Wilcoxon's test indicates a Z score of -2.207 and a p-value of 0.027 for the experimental group, signifying a significant change in distress. Mann-Whitney's test shows a Z score of -2.104 and a p-value of 0.035 between the experimental and control groups, indicating a significant difference in scores between the two groups. The research concludes that there is a significant reduction in distress after administering ACT to the experimental group, while such a reduction is not observed in the control group.
