Abstract
Fajar Iksanudin. Student ID 202210040311087. The Meaning of the Rooster Symbol as a Representation of the Groom's Masculinity in the Serah Temu Manten Ceremony of Javanese Traditional Marriage (A Case Study of the Community in Temurejo Hamlet). Undergraduate Thesis, Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, 2026.
Javanese traditional marriage is a form of cultural communication rich in symbols and philosophical meanings. In the serah temu manten ceremony in Temurejo Hamlet, Wonoagung Village, Malang Regency, the rooster is used as a cultural symbol with a distinctive meaning for the local community. The rooster is not merely regarded as a complement to the traditional ritual but is interpreted as a representation of the groom's masculinity, reflecting courage, responsibility, leadership, and readiness to build a family. However, modernization and changing perspectives among the younger generation have the potential to influence the understanding of this symbolic meaning. This study aims to examine the meaning of the rooster symbol in the serah temu manten ceremony and to understand how the community interprets it as a representation of the groom's masculinity.
This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type and a naturalistic paradigm. The study was based on Herbert Blumer's Symbolic Interactionism Theory. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving eight informants who possessed extensive knowledge of the serah temu manten tradition. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification.
The findings reveal that the rooster symbol is interpreted by the community as a representation of Javanese masculinity, encompassing courage, dignity, responsibility, diligence, protection of the family, and readiness to assume the role of the head of the household. These meanings are socially constructed and transmitted through continuous interactions across generations within the community. Furthermore, the rooster's physical characteristics, such as the jengger sanggar delimo (comb), mripat manik maninten (eyes), cucuk wesi pulosani (beak), and ceker lempuyang aking (claws), are interpreted as symbols of the ideal qualities expected of a man after marriage. The study also found that the rooster functions as a medium of cultural communication, connecting traditional values, family expectations, and the cultural identity of the Javanese community amid ongoing social change.
