Abstract

Cinema has become an effective communication medium for conveying social, cultural, and human experience messages. The film 3 Hari Untuk Selamanya highlights the journey of adolescents in searching for self-identity and freedom, a highly significant phenomenon within the contemporary Indonesian social and cultural context. This study aims to analyze the construction of the meaning of freedom and the quest for self-identity in the film using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. This study is grounded in Stuart Hall's representation theory, Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialist view on freedom, and Erik Erikson and Marcia's identity development theories, which emphasize exploration and commitment in adolescent identity formation.
The research method employed is qualitative with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Research data were obtained through film observation, recording visual signs, dialogues, and symbols appearing in film scenes. The analysis was conducted through Barthes' three semiotic stages: denotation, connotation, and myth, to trace how meaning is constructed and naturalized within the film's narrative.
The results indicate that the film constructs the meaning of freedom and self-identity through visual symbols such as specific locations, music, drugs, and conversations that reflect adolescent dilemmas in facing social, religious, and societal expectations. The dialogues and interactions between characters assert the process of searching for identity and freedom, while simultaneously showing the dynamics of social relations that influence self-development. The film successfully delivers a message close to the youth's experience, thereby shaping a relevant and reflective narrative on the issues of self-identity and freedom in self-expression.
