Abstract

his study aims to analyze the tendencies of body shaming based on the social construction of beauty portrayed in the film Imperfect: Karier, Cinta & Timbangan. Body shaming is a social issue that frequently occurs in Indonesian society due to narrow and uniform beauty standards, while film, as a mass medium, plays a role in both shaping and representing these beauty standards. This study employs a qualitative approach using Krippendorff's qualitative content analysis method, conducted through six stages: unitizing, sampling, coding, reducing, inferring, and narrating. The object of this research is the film Imperfect: Karier, Cinta & Timbangan, with the unit of analysis consisting of 16 scenes depicting verbal and nonverbal acts of body shaming. The results show that body shaming in this film occurs not only within circles of friendship but also within family, workplace, and public settings, manifested through dialogue, facial expressions, body gestures, and social treatment toward the main character, Rara. These findings reflect how beauty standards such as having a slim body and fair skin are socially constructed and normalized within society. The study concludes that Imperfect: Karier, Cinta & Timbangan functions not only as an entertainment medium but also as a medium of social education that critiques narrow beauty standards and encourages viewers to better accept and appreciate individual physical diversity.
