Abstract

Desviani, Handhyka Candra. 2026. The Relationship Between Stress and the Incidence of Acne Vulgaris: A Narrative Review. Literature Review, Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Supervisor: (I) Sri Adila Nurainiwati.

Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit that commonly occurs in adolescents and young adults. This condition is multifactorial, with psychological factors such as stress being considered one of the contributing factors.

Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between stress and the incidence of acne vulgaris.

Methods: This study used a narrative review method based on scientific articles obtained from several databases, including Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar.

Results: The analysis of the majority of literature showed a significant relationship between stress levels and the incidence and severity of acne vulgaris. However, several studies reported non-significant results, emphasizing that acne vulgaris is a multifactorial disease influenced by various contributing factors.

Conclusion: There is a close relationship between stress and the occurrence of acne vulgaris, although stress is not the only causative factor of acne vulgaris. Therefore, the prevention and management of acne vulgaris should be carried out comprehensively through stress control and improvement of other lifestyle related factors to minimize the risk of acne vulgaris development.
