Abstract

This study is motivated by the representation of women as members of the sandwich generation in the film Home Sweet Loan (2024) through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The character Kaluna (Yunita Siregar) serves as the primary object of analysis as a female figure caught between personal ambitions and family responsibilities. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method by analyzing nine key scenes selected purposively through three levels of semiotic analysis: denotation, connotation, and myth. The sandwich generation phenomenon refers to individuals of productive age who simultaneously bear financial and emotional responsibilities for two generations. This condition is increasingly experienced by women in Indonesia today. The findings reveal that the film represents Kaluna as a woman who struggles with daily responsibilities, balancing both family obligations and professional work (denotation), experiencing emotional pressure and gender inequality within the household (connotation), and reproducing the myth that women's sacrifice for the family is natural, noble, and should be carried out without complaint (myth). This study contributes to the field of film semiotics and the representation of women in Indonesian mass media, while also encouraging critical awareness of the normalization of women's dual burden as members of the sandwich generation.
