Abstract

This study analyzes the moral messages presented in the Indonesian animated film Jumbo, directed by Ryan Adriandhy, using Klaus Krippendorff’s content analysis approach and constructed through Franz Magnis-Suseno’s theory of moral values. This research was motivated by Jumbo's recognition as one of Indonesia’s leading animated films and the limited number of studies examining moral messages in Indonesian animated cinema. The study aims to explore how moral meanings are constructed through visual elements, scenes, and character interactions, rather than being conveyed solely through explicit narrative.
This research employs a qualitative approach with a focus on content analysis. Franz Magnis-Suseno’s theory of moral values serves as the analytical framework, categorizing moral values into honesty, courage, responsibility, critical attitude, and independence. Data were collected through documentation techniques, including repeated viewing of the film to systematically identify relevant scenes, dialogues, character expressions, and visual representations.
The findings reveal that Jumbo constructs moral messages through the values of honesty, courage, responsibility, critical attitude, and independence. At the denotative level, the film depicts events such as Don confronting bullying, searching for a storybook, preparing for a performance, fulfilling his promise to Meri, questioning injustice, and demonstrating courage under social pressure. These events convey deeper meanings, including the struggle for self-preservation, efforts to overcome self-doubt, awareness of personal responsibility, and the courage to resist injustice. At the mythic level, the film normalizes self-acceptance, solidarity, and resilience as fundamental values that are deeply embedded in everyday life.
