Abstract
Messages conveyed through films often reflect various aspects of human life. The relationship dynamics between daughters-in-law and mothers-in-law are generally perceived negatively by society. Conflicts commonly arise when both parties live under the same roof. Disagreements may occur due to differences in opinions, values, and principles. The film Catatan Harian Menantu Sinting, directed by Sunil Soraya, portrays several dynamics within household conflicts. This study analyzes those dynamics using a semiotic approach. The purpose of this research is to examine the representation of the relationship dynamics between daughters-in-law and mothers-in-law living in the same house. This study employs a qualitative research method. The findings indicate that Batak cultural values strongly influence the mother-in-law’s intervention in the couple’s decision regarding having children. Batak society adheres to a patrilineal kinship system, in which lineage is traced through the father’s family. Within this system, male offspring play a significant role in preserving the family lineage. Consequently, the mother-in-law places considerable pressure on the daughter-in-law to have children as soon as possible, particularly a son, creating substantial psychological pressure on the daughter-in-law as depicted in the film.
