Abstract

Twelfth-grade high school students are in a transitional stage with heavy academic demands and prolonged sitting, increasing the risk of Low Back Pain (LBP), which may affect sleep quality. These two factors are mutually related — back pain can disturb sleep, whereas poor sleep can intensify pain perception. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the incidence of Low Back Pain and sleep quality among twelfth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Kota Malang. This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design. A total of 170 students were selected through purposive sampling. The intensity of pain was measured using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), and sleep quality was assessed using the Indonesian version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank Correlation Test. A total of 83.5% of respondents experienced Low Back Pain, and 77.6% had poor sleep quality. The Spearman Rank analysis showed a significant relationship between Low Back Pain and sleep quality with a correlation coefficient (r) = 0.624 and a significance value (p) = 0.001 (p < 0.05). The relationship was positive and strong, meaning that higher pain intensity was associated with poorer sleep quality. There is a significant and positive relationship between Low Back Pain and sleep quality among twelfth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Malang. It is recommended that students, schools, and healthcare professionals promote ergonomic education, proper sitting posture, physical activity, and sleep hygiene to prevent LBP and improve sleep quality.
