Abstract
This research was motivated by the importance of discipline as one of the essential character traits that students must possess to support the success of the learning process and personality development. However, various disciplinary problems were still found among fourth-grade students at SDN Popoh 03, such as arriving late to school, showing a lack of order during lessons, failing to submit assignments on time, and not fully complying with school regulations. These conditions indicate the need for teachers to play an optimal role in guiding, directing, serving as role models, and implementing effective strategies to improve student discipline. The purpose of this study was to describe the role of teachers in improving the discipline of fourth-grade students at SDN Popoh 03 in the 2025/2026 academic year, to identify the condition of student discipline, to determine the supporting and inhibiting factors in the implementation of discipline, and to examine the efforts made by teachers to enhance student discipline.
This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study research design. The research was conducted at SDN Popoh 03, Blitar Regency, during the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The data sources consisted of primary data obtained through interviews and observations involving the fourth-grade teacher and the principal, as well as secondary data collected from school documentation. Data were gathered through interviews, observations, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation and technique triangulation.
The findings revealed that teachers play a significant role in improving student discipline through role modeling, habituation of routine activities, implementation of classroom rules, provision of rewards and punishments, and collaboration with parents. Nevertheless, several obstacles were identified, including students’ lack of self-awareness and insufficient support from the family environment. Therefore, teacher consistency, parental involvement, and continuous habituation are necessary to foster and strengthen student discipline effectively.
