Abstract
Nadia Zunaira Mustafida, 2026, Student ID (NIM) 202210040311142. INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION STYLE ADAPTATION OF INDONESIANS WITH SOUTH KOREAN SOCIETY (A CASE STUDY ON INDONESIANS IN SOUTH KOREA). Undergraduate Thesis. Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Advisor: Dr. Joko Susilo, S.Sos., M.Si.
Intercultural communication is an interaction process that occurs between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. In this process, individuals often face various challenges, such as language barriers, differing communication norms, and social habits that can affect the effectiveness of communication. This study aims to determine the adaptation of intercultural communication styles among Indonesians with South Korean society. This research employs a constructivist paradigm with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained through interviews with Indonesians living in South Korea. Anxiety/Uncertainty Management (AUM) theory was utilized to understand the process of managing anxiety and uncertainty in intercultural communication.
The results of the study indicate that in the early stages of interaction, informants experienced anxiety and uncertainty, particularly in using the Korean language, determining the appropriate speech level with their interlocutors, understanding communication patterns, and adjusting to a new cultural environment. To manage these conditions, informants made various efforts, such as increasing interaction with the local community, familiarizing themselves with using the Korean language in daily life, asking native speakers for corrections, practicing speaking, and observing the communication patterns prevalent in their surroundings. Along with increasing communication experience, informants became more confident and were able to adjust their language use, message delivery methods, and communication behavior according to the context of the interaction they faced. The findings of this study demonstrate that the adaptation of communication styles takes place through a process of managing anxiety and uncertainty that develops through continuous intercultural communication experiences.
