Abstract

Muhammad Fhareza Zhary Syahputra, 202010040311008, Students’ Perceptions of Local Cultural Representation in the Live Stream “In Real Life Stream in Indonesia Part 3 Yogyakarta” on the IShowSpeed YouTube Channel (A Study of Students at Muhammadiyah University of Malang)

This study aims to examine the perceptions of students at Muhammadiyah University of Malang regarding the representation of Indonesian local culture in the live-streamed video “In Real Life (IRL) Part 3 Yogyakarta” on the IShowSpeed YouTube channel. The collected data was then analyzed using the Theory of Selective Perception and the Concept of Perception in the Intrapersonal Communication System by Jalaluddin Rakhmat.

The results show that students held diverse perceptions, which the researcher categorized into three groups. The first group perceived the livestream as a new innovation in the creative industry. The second group perceived the livestream as a reflection of Indonesian society’s susceptibility to influence or FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) due to the arrival of an international content creator, which led to the formation of a disruptive crowd that was detrimental to local residents. The third group consists of students who have lived in Yogyakarta; they view these live streams as an attempt to protect authentic local identity because, in their view, the disturbances that harm the surrounding environment do not reflect the atmosphere of Yogyakarta they once experienced—one of tranquility, peace, and residents who are polite and very friendly.
